First responders were dispatched to Francesco's bakery on South Broadway in Hicksville at approximately 11:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 28, officials said. The fire was mostly contained within the bakery, though it spread to an adjacent building, which suffered minor damage.

The fire reportedly started in the roof of the building before spreading to the rest of the basement. Nine fire departments responded to the scene, and the fire was reported under control within an hour, though firefighters remained at the bakery to battle any hot spots that flared up.

One firefighter suffered a non-life-threatening injury while battling the blaze. No one was inside the building when the fire started.

The Nassau County Police Department said that crews from the Hicksville, Farmingdale, Wantagh, Syosset, Jericho, Westbury, North Bellmore and Massapequa fire departments responded. In total, there were 100 firemen and 19 fire apparatus on scene. The fire caused "extensive damage" to the bakery, and minor smoke and water damage to adjacent buildings.

According to reports, dozens of wedding cakes were expected from Francesco's bakery this week, prompting the owners and employees to transition to their second location to ensure they can deliver to their customers.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. This is a developing story. Check Daily Voice for updates as they become available.
